김병종의 생명 회화 40년

  이 책은 화업 40년에 달하는 김병종의 예술 세계를 총체적으로 조명하고 정리한 결과물이다. 한국문화예술위원회 2022-2023 <작가 조사-연구-비평> 지원사업에 선정되어 진행된 이번 연구의 목적은 현대 한국화의 변화와 국제화를 선도한 김병종 작가의 미학적 가치관과 실천을 구체적으로 파악하는 것이었다. 따라서 그의 초기 작업부터 최근의 작업까지 살펴보는 가운데 주요 작품을 선별해 소개하고, 미술평론가로서 출발을 알린 1980년 동아일보 신춘문예 당선작 「자유와 동질화의 초극」 (『신동아』, 1980)도 함께 싣기로 했다. 또한 이번에 작성한 김병종 작가의 연보는 그의 활동과 참여 전시에 대한 당시 신문기사의 내용을  정리하고 추가하여 당시 한국화 분야의 상황을 이해하는 데  도움되도록 했다.

  이 책에서는 김병종 작가의 작품 활동을 1980년대부터 2020년대까지 네 시기로 나누고 마지막 장은 그의 예술세계에서 빠질 수 없는 화첩기행 시리즈를 더했다. 각 시기별 특징에 대한 설명과 함께 책에 실린 도판은 총 80점이다. 여기에 대표 작품 5점의 해제와 한국, 일본, 중국 필진 4명의 김병종 작품론에 해당하는 글이 실려 있다. 이미 김병종 작가 연구로 단행본을 출간한 바 있는 전영백(홍익대학교 교수)은 김병종 회화의 다층적 문맥을 미술사적으로 심도 있게 서술하였다. 그리고 우시로쇼지 마사히로(기타규슈시립미술관 관장)는 한국 현대미술에서 김병종 회화가 보여주는 전통과 정체성의 문제를 아시아미술의 관점으로 풀어냈다. 자오리(중국 베이징 중앙미술학원 교수)는 김병종의 작품 전반에서 드러나는 주제와 의미를 파고들어 분석했다. 마지막으로 이민수(홍익대학교 미술대학 초빙교수)는 작품 시기별 특징을 중심으로 김병종 회화의 시대적 의의를 고찰했다. 동아시아 세 나라 학자와 연구자의 논고를 비교함으로써 보다 객관적이고 국제적인 시각으로 21세기 한국화가 김병종의 회화를 이해하는 계기가 되리라 기대한다.

40 Years of Kim Byungjong’s Life Painting

This book represents a comprehensive illumination and organization of the artistic journey of Kim Byungjong spanning four decades in the art industry. Selected for the Arts Council Korea's 2022-2023 Support Project, the study aims to discern the aesthetic values and practices of artist Kim Byungjong, a pivotal figure in the transformation and internationalization of contemporary Korean painting. To achieve this, the book delves into his major works, ranging from his early pieces to his latest creations, including his 1980 Dong-A Daily Newspaper’s Annual Spring Literary Prize-winning piece, “Overcoming Freedom and Homogenization" (Shin Dong-A, 1980), which marked his emergence as an art critic. Furthermore, the compilation of Kim Byungjong's chronicles integrates newspaper articles of the time, shedding light on his activities and involvement in exhibitions, thus providing insight into the Korean painting scene of that era.

Within this book, Kim Byungjong's artistic endeavors are categorized into four periods from the 1980s to the 2020s, with the final chapter dedicated to his indispensable Picture Book of Journey series. The book features eighty illustrations accompanied by explanations delineating the characteristics of each period. Additionally, it includes analyses from five representative works and perspectives from four scholars: Chun Young-Paik, a professor at Hongik University, who has previously authored a book on Kim Byungjong, provides an in-depth exploration of the multi-layered context of his paintings within art history. Ushiroshoji Masahiro, Director of Kitakyushu City Museum of Art, examines the themes of tradition and identity in Kim Byungjong's work within the context of Korean contemporary art from an Asian art perspective. Zhao Li, a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, delves into the overarching themes and meanings conveyed in Kim Byungjong's works. Lastly, Lee Minsoo, a visiting professor at Hongik University's College of Fine Arts, analyzes the historical significance of Kim Byungjong's paintings, focusing on the distinct characteristics of each period. By juxtaposing the insights of scholars and researchers from East Asian countries, the book endeavors to offer a more objective and international perspective on the paintings of Kim Byungjong, a prominent Korean artist of the 21st century.
